Week 2

Pencil Art (Sculptures)

During the lecture on Tuesday, Dr. Gimzewski briefly mentioned the type of artworks that can be created with graphite or a pencil. Specifically, he mentioned that there were artists online who have been carving micro-sculptures out of a standard pencil. Before Dr. Gimzewski mentioned this, I had somehow never come across this surprisingly popular art form that seems to have been on the internet and in the art world for quite a bit.

Pencils

Before the lecture on Tuesday I never questioned about the how pencils are made. Pencils is something we grew up with without questioning anything about it. It's been something that always there. After the lecture I looked up for the first time what the process is like to make a pencil. I have linked the video below that I found that was very interesting by showing the process of how these pencils are made. I also did some research to gather more information about how its made.

Week 2

Stinging Nettle is an interesting object we touched on. I always encounter them but due to my lack of knowledge of it, I never really look into what this magical plant is and made use out it. After a little research, I learned that Stinging Nettle has Vitamin A, B, C, and K, minerals, fats, amino acids, polyphenols, and pigments.

Week 2 : Hox Zodiac

For the second week of class, we focused on the Hox Zodiac as it ties to Chinese culture. We discussed every animal on the chart along with its connection to each student in the classroom. Each animal has different characteristics that pertain to different traits of every individual under that sign.

Week 2: Hox Zodiac

This week, after reviewing the workshop series from the previous weekend, we reviewed Victoria Vesna's Hox Zodiac project. We then began reviewing each animal and surveying the class for their background, stories, and histories behind their corresponding zodiac animals. Each animal apparently had a corresponding color, organ, taste, and more. These characteristic selections were what I found most interesting about each animal in the zodiac.

Week 2: Hox Zodiac

Last Wednesday, in class we discussed about the Hox Zodiac (Chinese Zodiac) and the twelve animals it represents in order to understand and discuss our relationship with these animals. Along with discussion on each animal, there was food being passed as representation of each animal’s offerings and it helped create an engaging space where we were able to speak about the relationships between animals, culture and foods.
