Week 7: Snake & Dragon Project Process

This week, Rachel and I wanted to test out and experimented with different foods for our dinner. The dish that I created was a Crying Tiger Steak that consists of New York Cut Steak that has been marinated with Oyster Sauce and white pepper. Alongside the steak, there is a sauce that I created that is made out of: Fish Sauce, Lime, Garlic, Sugar, Salt, Cilantro, Green Onions, and Shallots. The sauce is sweet, acidic, and umami and has attributes from both the Dragon and Snake.

The way that this dish is plated in a bed of lettuce and cucumbers, which I wanted to tie back to the earth element of the dragon, with the leaves and greens of the Earth. I really like the way I plated my dish as it not only looks pretty but almost serves as an offering to some sort of deity.

In terms of set design for the table, I definitely wanted to create a mixture of the Snake and Dragon. The Snake is a fire element with the color red whereas the Dragon is an earth element with the color brown. I imagine the table to be made out of wood and have a nice brown finish and additionally have elements of moss on it to reflect the Dragon. I want to bring candles and red flowers to relate back to the Snake and create a combination of the two creatures.

According to ancient myths, Vietnamese people are descended from a dragon and a fairy. The dragons of Vietnam were symbolic for rain and integral for agriculture. I think I can tie this mythology into my set design by incorporating elements of water and I want to showcase the theme of prosperity somehow. In addition to the Vietnamese depiction of dragons, the Koreans viewed snakes as symbols of immortality, regeneration, and eternal life since it sheds its skin to be reborn and disappears for a period due to hibernation. I want to explore the concept of regeneration and immortality that the snake has, as it could be an interesting concept for either the design of the table or a potential dish.
