Week 3: Lunar New Year & Plasma

Tuesday:

Although I got lost for Tuesday class and ended up going to the botanical garden, I was able to watch the recording of the zoom. In the zoom meeting there were various artists and scientists who discussed their collaborative work around various relationships. Such as animals, genetics, food and other interesting topics. When the class arrived to the botanical garden to celebrate New Year, the year of the rabbit. We talked about the certain culture and foods usually consumed and the reasoning behind it. There was chocolate donut, honey sesame treat and a roll (I do not remember what its called sorry). We lastly walked around the botanical garden and I thought it was so interesting to see how many plants that are around the world are planted and living in a contained ecosystem.

Thursday:

After looking at the kombucha mycelium we had a quick presentation about mycelium, mushroom, and fungi. Through out the presentation I noticed that everyone kept looking at the kumbucha since it had a strong smell which I thought was funny. Mycelium is made from fungi that grows in ecosystems that then turn into a system to exchange nutrients. Which is very interesting because the balance of relationships like this is important for our planet. We also saw how different artists how they used microbiomes to create art such as clothing items and sculptures. After the presentation we had to walk to the Plasma Research Lab in Westwood which unfortunately, I was not able to see in person. Once again I got lost and didn't make it on time, so I was able to learn that I need to follow everyone at all times. I was told by a classmate that three was a plasma machine that contained plasma and on one of the sides there was gas that has been injected for crystal formation.
